Great Songwriting

What make's a really great song?

What is it that the likes of Bob Dylan, Burt Bacharach and Lennon and McCartney have in spades that the rest of us mere mortals seem to lack?

As a songwriter myself, but sadly not one you'll see in the pantheon of really Great Songwriters, I'm undertaking to study some great songs, with a view to getting some kind on insight into how to write better songs. Wish me luck!
